Review: Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter by Seth Grahame-Smith

I thought it would be fitting to review this book today, since it is his birthday.

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter

by Seth Grahame-Smith
Publisher: Grand Central Publishing
Publish Date: February 16, 2010
Genre: Science Fiction/Fantasy/Horror
Rating: 4.5 STARS

SUMMARY
When Abraham Lincoln was nine years old, his mother died from an ailment called the "milk sickness." Only later did he learn that his mother's deadly affliction was actually the work of a local vampire, seeking to collect on Abe's father's unfortunate debts.

When the truth became known to the young Abraham Lincoln, he wrote in his journal: henceforth my life shall be one of rigorous study and devotion. I shall become learned in all things—a master of mind and body. And this mastery shall have but one purpose."

REVIEW
When I first heard of this book, I wasn't too sure of it. I read Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Seth and wasn't impressed by it. I knew this book could either be really good or really bad. I have to say, it was really good! I was surprised how wrapped I became in it. At times I could actually hear Abraham Lincoln talking...:)

Seth has taken Lincoln's history and incorporated in vampires. He does it so flawlessly that at times you actually could believe that it was possible. We are taken from the the death of his mother (by vampires) and his oath to avenge her to the day he meets Henry Sturges (a vampire) who trains him to be the best vampire hunter. He meets Edgar Allen Poe and finds his fascination with vampires a bit morbid. Lincoln didn't want to free the slaves because he believed in it, he wanted to free them because he learned they were the food source for the vampires. He figures, get ride of slavery you will get rid of the vampires. We learn that Jefferson Davis is on the side of vampires and Henry has been training Lincoln to fight this battle against him (which turns into the Civil War).

I loved it and urge people to give it a chance, it isn't as cheesy as it looks...:)

Book was borrowed from my local library. My opinions are my own.
