Review: The Replacement by Brenna Yovanoff

The ReplacementThe Replacement
by Brenna Yovanoff
Publisher: Razorbill
Publication Date: September 21, 2010

Mackie is a replacement. No one but his own family knows this and if anyone else should find out, his life would be in danger. In this dark and eerie town there are secrets, secrets that aren’t whispered even between best friends. But it is that time again where one of them must be sacrificed to the faeries for the better of the town. Now the faeries do try to make it right by giving the humans a “replacement” but, unfortunately, these replacements don’t normally survive very long. Mackie is the exception and that is because of his mom’s own secret.

First thing first, this is a unique read. For starters, above I called them faeries but really they are vaguely reference as that and are more or less unnamed throughout the book. Yovanoff has created this dark and creepy atmosphere that wraps around you and sucks you in. There are parts that are shuddering gruesome and cringe worthy, especially with some of her descriptions of the dead ones. There are bright spots in the book. Mackie and Tate’s love-hate relationship, the sisterly protectiveness of Emma of Mackie, the love of two parents who have lost their real child and compassionately raise Mackie as their own. Loved the loyal friendship between Mackie and Roswell, it really shows what true friendship is suppose to be.

In saying all that, I will just warn parents that there is some swearing in this book. Granted most of it is mild but there is the use of the f*** word once that I recall (pg 312) and I thought it wasn’t necessary (this is my own personally opinion, I am not criticizing the author who has put tons of hard work into this great book)
