Author Interview: Tina Smith @tinawolfsirens

I would like to welcome Tina Smith to my blog today! She is the author of Wolf Sirens, a Y/A, PNR series.

I know your book, Wolf Sirens #2: Fever, was released in January 2013 and I really want to talk about that. But first, I’d like my readers to know a little about you.

What is your favorite quality about yourself?
Hmmm…my tenacity.

What are you most proud of accomplishing so far in your life?
My books (Wolf Sirens) and my studies. Also my daughter.

We’re going to talk about this book that you’ve written, but first, let us learn a little about how you got your start in writing.

How has your upbringing influenced your writing?
Of course it has had a huge influence on everything I do, write and feel. I had a hard time of it in high school, well in all of my schooling. I was an undiagnosed introvert. Wolf Sirens is just really me spewing myself onto the page, all the hurt and rage, pain and misunderstanding. That’s how I relate to the werewolves so well – and Lila too.  ;)

What inspired you to write your first book?
I keep saying it was just something that developed naturally. I’m not some literary prodigy, my parents never read to me, I just was a writer. I had some time when my naturopathic school closed and I just thought I was ready to do it. It was an insane thing to attempt, but here I am. You risk nothing you gain nothing.

Okay, now we can get to talking about Fever.

Tell us about a little bit about Fever.
It’s the sequel to Wolf Sirens Forbidden. Lila is in a dark hole, she has to find the will to climb out and go on despite everything. We all go through difficult patches, I put a lot of myself into it. All the break-up angst and depression I have felt. But in the story she stands up and decides to struggle for something no matter what. How did you develop your plot and characters? They are organic, they are at first just an idea but then they grow, I edit a lot and built on the original concepts until I had something tight. Right up until the fat lady sings I add the tiny details. Cres is loosely based on an old friend. The rest are completely from my imagination. I like them to all be individuals. Cresida’s quirkiness is partly due to her circumstance, I love that being a wolf and a hunter makes her weird in an unusual way. I love her dress sense.

How important do you think villains are in a story?
As important as light is to dark. I prefer characters that straddle the lines though, and whether they are good or bad is up to interpretation. But you don’t really have a story without one.

How do you come up the title of your book?
I played around with words, I love words and I wanted something individual and original and it fitted so well, without being tacky.

Have you started your next project yet?
If so, can you tell us anything about it? I have just published Night Fall the third in the series. I am so excited to finally have three out! I have worked so hard. I love all the characters and action steps up the pace with every book. Everything has woven together and will culminate in the next book. There will be some surprises.

Do you have any specific last thoughts that you want to say to your readers?
If you love twilight, Maggie Stiefvater’s Wolves of Mercy Falls, strong female leads and paranormal, I’m your cup of tea. I like depth and realism, I don’t do shallow. If you appreciate that sort of thing give me a whirl, and please leave reviews online, they are so important.

BONUS FUN QUESTIONS

What is your favorite TV show?
I loved the Voice auditions (not so much the rest), Revenge and shamefully I do like reality t.v, it tends to draw me in. Auction Hunters is cool. Occasionally I catch up on the Bold and the Beautiful, its sooo bad that it’s good. Being Human was cool, too. At the moment I am into Homeland. Claire Danes plays a really dynamic character.

Where is your favorite place to read?
In bed. Where it’s warm and comfy. It’s relaxing.

Dogs or cats?
Dogs all the way. I have a Cocker Cross Cavalier and he is my son.

What was the last book you bought?
Wuthering Heights, Hunger games and I love Amanda Hockings Hollowland, which I read on my ipad.

Coffee or tea?
Tea! I love herbal tea with no sugar and a splash of cold water. I drink all types, mainly green tea and chamomile – the two together in one cup is my fave.
