ARC Review: A Blood Seduction by Pamela Palmer

Publish Date: May 29, 2012
Publisher: Avon
Format: eARC
Source: edelweiss

FIRST LINE
(may differ from final copy)
Perched on her stool in the chilly lab of the Clinical Center of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, Quinn Lennox studied the lab results on the desk in front of her.

Quinn Lennox has no idea why her unusual ability, after being dormant for quite some time, has now become unmanageable. She has started to notice pockets that are forming in the universe and that there is something strange when you look into them. While hunting for her brother’s love interest they stumble thru one of these pockets and Quinn’s life is about to take on a whole new meaning.

Quinn and her brother become separated in Vamp City. Vamp City is an alternate world where vamps rule and humans are just food and slaves. Quinn is lucky enough to land in the hands of the dangerous and sexy Arturo Mazza who the reader will love to hate. Their chemistry can practically be tasted and the reader craves more.

In Quinn’s favor, her unusual talent has landed her in the role of a sorceress who has been foretold to be the savior of  Vamp City but first she must survive Arturo’s master’s treacherous games. Knowing she must escape she must find her brother before he is placed in the gladiator games and to do this she must also play Arturo’s games. Oh yes, these vamps do love their games.

Action-packed and steamy this vampire horror will have you longing the next installment. You will be shocked at the devious nature of these vamps because there is no holding back when the world is a demented vampires’ play land. I personally loved that these vampires were bad to the bone yet you know that something is simmering underneath Arturo’s tough facade. Definitely catered for adult readers only.

Review: Redemption Day by Steve O'Brien

By Steve O’Brien
Publish Date: March 22, 2012
Publisher: A & N Publishing
Format: Paperback
Source: Publisher

FIRST LINE
Killing by an empowered government was deemed justice.

When I read the synopsis of Redemption Day, I was intrigued. The Posse Comitatus, right wing militarists, has always fascinated me. Steve O’Brien takes on a journey of what if The Posse rises and sets into motion a plan that starts with kidnapping a Supreme Court Justice and ending with a city in the grip of terror from terrorists from our own country.

O’Brien’s main character Nick James is just an ordinary guy who has recently lost his terrorism analyst job at the Department of Homeland Security. On his way home he receives a phone call from Sheriff Brager who met Nick an Identity Scams conference. Brager thinks that Nick could help him with the mysterious kidnapping of Supreme Court Justice Silvio Caprelli. Unfortunately by the time Nick meets with Brager outside of Nick’s house, Brager has been shot. The authorities now think Nick has something to do with all of this and he is about to become their prime suspect number one. Lucky for Nick, his old flame, Kate is involved in the taskforce in charge of finding him and bring him in. She knows that Nick isn’t capable of masterminding something this big but she has a lot of obstacles in the way to prove it.

The beginning starts out fast-paced and thrilling but after finding Nick it seemed to slow down a bit. I felt that maybe the search for Nick could have been drawn out a bit more. It seemed to me that when they found him it was like they just gave up on the idea that Nick could possibly have something to do with what is going on. But it turns around in the end. Can’t say much about it because I don’t want to spoil it but it is action-packed and has you on the edge of your seat wondering if they are going to be able to stop The Posse in time. Satisfactory for the political thriller lovers out there.

I know it has been a LONG time since I last posted one of these but I am vowing to try to post a couple of times a month. Since it has been my birthday month I went out and bought myself a series that I have been wanting for quite awhile now (Game of Thrones). I don't normally read this type of fantasy but I watched the first season on DVD and I want to know more..:D

Review: Wildthorn by Jane Eagland

Publish Date: September 6, 2010
Publisher:  Houghton MifflinBooks
Format: Hardcover
Source: Personal
Challenge Met: 2012 TBR

FIRST LINE
The carriage jolts and splashes along the rutted lanes by the heavy November rains.

On her journey to what she thinks is to become a companion, Louisa Cosgrove finds herself at the front doors of Wildthorn Hall, an insane asylum. Not knowing why these people are calling her Lucy Childs, Louisa finds herself fighting to stay sane. The reader is taken from past to present narrated by Louisa, so that we understand in tidbits of maybe why she is in this situation. Is it because she wanted to follow in her deceased father’s footsteps and become a doctor or did her cousin tell someone about the “incident” that happened between them? Or is she truly insane? Louisa develops a friendship with Eliza, one of the attendants at Wildthorn and because of this friendship finds the answers that she is looking for.

What a roller coaster ride this book was! I loved the air of mystery that surrounded the entire reason that Louisa was in the asylum to begin with. Until it is revealed of who put her in and why, the reader is constantly speculating. Wildthorn accurately portrays how easy it was for young woman who didn’t want to conform to what was the standard for woman could be sent to an insane asylum.  I thought Louisa’s character was very strong and the author hints ambiguously of another reason why Louisa is not like other woman. Very well written and would recommend this to all young adult historical fiction readers with only a bit of caution due to some mature subject matters that are addressed.

Guest Post + Giveaway: Basing Characters on Real People

BASING CHARACTERS ON REAL PEOPLE
by Vanessa Morgan

I often get the question if I base my characters on real people. Normally, this is not the case, but I made an exception for A Good Man. The scene that I'm going to share with you below is a good example as the character of Matthias is a combination of two people I know. When I started to write A Good Man, I clearly based it on a friend who goes on and on about how important strategy is to get ahead in the movie business without actually acting upon it. When Matthias Pohl (an insanely popular reality TV star in France) agreed to play the part, I changed it a bit so that it resembled his media appearance.

A Good Man is now being turned into a feature film. Who would you cast as Louis and Matthias?

ABOUT A GOOD MAN
Liked Dexter and American Psycho? Then you'll love A Good Man.

Louis Caron is a good man – vegetarian, he feeds the homeless, takes care of animals and is concerned with the ecological future of the planet. But his altruism has a sinister edge – he's a vampire - and local detective Taglioni is becoming increasingly suspicious. Louis' attempt to escape the police will take him on a journey into his own private hell where he is not only forced to confront his worst fears, but also to destroy the lives of those he cares about most.

EXCERPT of A Good Man (screenplay)
INT. BAR – NIGHT

The clock behind the bar indicates 1:30. Louis tries
to pick up a pretty girl. He talks a lot, but she
doesn't listen to him and seems bored.

LOUIS
I'm going to be a godfather. First time
ever, can you believe it? When I looked at
the father, a couple of years ago, he had
dropped out of college, couldn't even keep
a girl. I gave him a big kick in the butt,
and little by little, he started to study
again. He even has a masters today. He's
the one who gives me lessons now, with
philosophical quotes and stuff. And that
has an effect on me, like... incredible.
You know, there's a lot of bad stuff going
on in this world, but things like that...
that's what counts. You see what I mean?

Louis is still talking to the girl when a BOY
approaches her. He bites her in the neck, playfully.
They leave together.

LATER

Louis is still at the bar, but the clock now
indicates 5:15. The place is almost empty.

MATTHIAS (26 years old) talks to him. This time, it
is Louis who doesn't pay attention to the
conversation.

MATTHIAS
In order to succeed in the movie business,
you need a strategy. I need a strategy to
be able to play in a movie. I need a
strategy to progress, to get paid for what
I do. Having a good strategy is essential.

Louis takes a sip from his wine. Matthias awaits a
reaction. As the answer doesn't come, Matthias
continues his monologue.

MATTHIAS
Do you know how many years I've been
looking for a stategy? Twelve years! Or
fourteen… I'm not sure. It's really
difficult to find a good strategy.

LOUIS
If you say the word *strategy* once more,
you will regret it.

Matthias doesn't even hear what Louis says.

MATTHIAS
I failed another casting this morning. Just
because I don't have a good strategy yet.
There's no point really in going to a
casting without a good strategy... Secret
Story 2, that was something different. I
prepared my strategy more than a year in
advance.

LOUIS
(talking to himself)
Loser.

MATTHIAS
(didn't hear well)
What? I didn't catch that.

LOUIS
Nothing.

Louis notices a white line of powder under Matthias'
nose.

LOUIS
Do you have some coke by any chance?

MATTHIAS
(stupid question)
Of course.

Matthias reaches for the coke inside his jacket, but
Louis stops him.

LOUIS
Not here. Let's go to the car.

EXT. SIDEWALK – LATER

Louis and Matthias leave the bar and go toward the
car. They are the only ones in the street. Matthias
unlocks the car and the two men get in.

INT. CAR – LATER

Matthias takes the coke from the glove box. A few
speed pills accidentally fall on the ground.

LOUIS
I see you have some speed too. Let's do
that instead; it works more quickly.

Matthias gives Louis a pill and swallows one as well.
Once the drug starts to work, Louis jumps onto
Matthias and bites into his arm. Quick images of
Matthias' life (including some original images from
Secret Story 2) flash before Louis' eyes. Even before Matthias is dead, Louis takes a pair of
latex gloves from the inside pocket of his jacket and
puts them on. He then pulls out a knife, places it in
Matthias' hand and cuts its victims veins at the
place of the biting wounds to make it look like
suicide.

Louis leaves the car, closes the door and starts to
run. Farther down the street, he stops to vomit.

CUT TO :

EXT. STREET - DAY

A police officer approaches Matthias' car and sees
him 'sleeping' with his mouth wide open. He knocks on
the window – several times – but Matthias doesn't
stir. When the police officer inspects the car more
closely, he notices that Matthias has cut his wrists
and that the car is full of blood.

ARC Review: The Slayer by Theresa Meyers

Publish Date: April 3, 2012
Publisher: Zebra Books
Format: ARC
Source: Publisher

FIRST LINE
(may differ from final copy)
“Put down the gun, Hoss, ‘fore I blow that oversized melon of yours to kingdom come.”

Winchester Jackson knows what supernatural beings to fight in the States, but now he is thrown into the unknown when His Vampiric Imperial Majesty sends his emissary, Lady Alexandra Porter (Alexa), to bring Winn back to Transylvania to find the next missing piece of the Book of Legend that Winn’s father hid. Although Winn has left the world of supernatural fighting he is reeled back in after finding out that they must find all the missing pieces of the book or all hell will break loose. In an unlikely turn of events, it is the beautiful vampire, Alexa, who aids him in more ways than one. Winn has always believed that there are no good vampires in the world but after meeting Alexa , Winn slowly starts to realize that there might be a few good Darkin and that maybe his heart isn’t as hard as he believes it to be.

A good follow up for Meyers. She keeps the pace going from the first book, The Hunter, and by the end you are looking forward to the third installment. The steampunk world Meyer’s has built is very imaginative and I love their adventures on the airship. Definitely felt like I wanted more out of this one but I was satisfied with what was given by Meyers.
